Net Profit
Proceeds − Cost Basis
Worked Example
Given
0.5 BTC · Buy $40,000 · Sell $55,000 · Buy fee $20 · Sell fee $27.50
- Cost Basis
- 0.5 × $40,000 + $20 = $20,020
- Proceeds
- 0.5 × $55,000 − $27.50 = $27,472.50
- Net Profit
- $27,472.50 − $20,020 = $7,452.50
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do exchange fees work in crypto trading?
- Most exchanges charge a maker/taker fee as a percentage of the trade value. For example, a 0.1% fee on a $20,000 purchase = $20. To use this calculator, compute the flat dollar fee (quantity × price × fee%) and enter it in the Buy Fee field. Some exchanges charge flat fees or use tiered structures — enter whatever you actually paid.
- Does this calculate taxes?
- No. Crypto tax rules vary significantly by jurisdiction — some treat gains as capital gains, others as income, and rules for airdrops, staking rewards, and DeFi are especially complex. Use this calculator for the pre-tax P&L, then consult a crypto-aware tax platform or adviser for your tax liability.
- Can I use this for partial Bitcoin or fractions of coins?
- Yes. The quantity field accepts decimal values down to millionths (0.000001). This works for satoshis (0.00000001 BTC), milliether (0.001 ETH), and any fractional token amount.
- How is return percentage calculated?
- Return % = Net Profit ÷ Cost Basis × 100. Cost basis is (Buy Price × Quantity) + Buy Fee. This gives you the actual percentage return on your invested capital including fees, not just the price movement percentage.
