What Is a Pip in Forex?

Every forex profit and loss is measured in pips. Before you can calculate position sizes, understand your broker's spreads, or make sense of a trade's P&L, you need to know exactly what a pip is — and why the value of one pip changes depending on the pair and lot size you trade.

What Is a Pip? — The Definition

A pip stands for "percentage in point" (sometimes "price interest point"). It is the smallest standardised price movement that a currency pair can make, and it is the unit brokers and traders use to measure gains, losses, spreads, and stop-loss distances.

For the vast majority of currency pairs — everything except JPY pairs — one pip is a movement of 0.0001, which is the fourth decimal place. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, it has moved exactly 1 pip.

For pairs where the Japanese Yen is the quote currency (USD/JPY, GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY etc.), one pip is 0.01 — the second decimal place. If USD/JPY moves from 150.00 to 150.01, that is 1 pip. The reason for this difference is covered below.

Standard pairs (non-JPY)

1 pip = 0.0001

4th decimal place

EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, USD/CHF…

JPY pairs

1 pip = 0.01

2nd decimal place

USD/JPY, GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY…

Why Pips Matter for Profit and Loss

Every forex trade's profit or loss is the number of pips moved multiplied by the pip value in your account currency. This is true regardless of whether you made money or lost it.

Example: you buy EUR/USD at 1.0850 and sell at 1.0870 — that is a 20-pip gain. Your profit is 20 × pip value. If you were trading 0.5 standard lots and the pip value is $10 per standard lot, your profit is 20 × ($10 × 0.5) = $100. If the trade had gone against you by 20 pips instead, the loss would be the same $100.

This is why pips are the first thing you need to understand before calculating position sizes. Your stop-loss distance in pips, combined with your pip value and lot size, determines your exact dollar risk on every trade.

Pip Value Examples Across Pairs and Lot Sizes

The formula for pip value in your account currency is:

Pip Value = Pip Size × Lot Size (Units) × Quote→Account Rate

Worked Example 1: EUR/USD — 1 Standard Lot — USD Account

Pip size
0.0001 (non-JPY pair)
Lot size (1 standard lot)
100,000 units
Quote→Account rate (USD/USD)
1.0
Pip value per lot
0.0001 × 100,000 × 1.0 = $10.00

Worked Example 2: USD/JPY at 150.00 — 1 Standard Lot — USD Account

Pip size
0.01 (JPY pair)
Lot size (1 standard lot)
100,000 units
Quote currency (JPY) → Account (USD)
1 ÷ 150.00 = 0.006667
Pip value per lot
0.01 × 100,000 × 0.006667 ≈ $6.67
Pair Micro (0.01 lot) Mini (0.1 lot) Standard (1 lot)
EUR/USD $0.10 $1.00 $10.00
GBP/USD $0.10 $1.00 $10.00
AUD/USD $0.10 $1.00 $10.00
USD/JPY * ≈$0.07 ≈$0.67 ≈$6.67
GBP/JPY * ≈$0.07 ≈$0.67 ≈$6.67

* JPY pair pip values are approximate and change as the USD/JPY rate changes. Values shown assume USD/JPY ≈ 150.00 and USD account. Use the pip value calculator for live rates.

Pipettes (Fractional Pips) Explained

Most modern brokers quote prices to one decimal place beyond the standard pip — this fractional unit is called a pipette (also "fractional pip" or "point"). For non-JPY pairs quoted to 5 decimal places (e.g. 1.08523), the last digit is the pipette. For JPY pairs quoted to 3 decimal places (e.g. 150.234), the last digit is the pipette.

Pip vs Pipette

EUR/USD: 1.08523

Pip = 2 (4th decimal) | Pipette = 3 (5th decimal)

USD/JPY: 150.234

Pip = 2 (2nd decimal) | Pipette = 4 (3rd decimal)

1 pip = 10 pipettes. Pipettes allow brokers to quote tighter spreads than a whole pip. A spread of 0.8 pips (8 pipettes) is more precise than either 0 or 1 pip. For position sizing and P&L, you work in pips — pipettes are a display precision detail and do not change the underlying formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pip in forex trading?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price movement in a forex currency pair. For most pairs, such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and AUD/USD, one pip equals 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For pairs where the Japanese Yen is the quote currency — such as USD/JPY and GBP/JPY — one pip equals 0.01 (the second decimal place), because the yen is quoted at a much higher nominal value.
How much is a pip worth in dollars?
Pip value depends on three things: the currency pair, your lot size, and your account currency. For EUR/USD traded in a USD account: 1 pip = $10 per standard lot (100,000 units), $1 per mini lot (10,000 units), and $0.10 per micro lot (1,000 units). For USD/JPY at 150.00 in a USD account: 1 pip = $6.67 per standard lot (because pip value is divided by the current quote price). The pip value calculator handles all of these conversions automatically.
What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?
A pipette (also called a fractional pip or point) is one-tenth of a pip. Most modern forex brokers quote prices to 5 decimal places for non-JPY pairs (e.g. 1.08523) and 3 decimal places for JPY pairs (e.g. 150.234). The fifth decimal place (or third for JPY pairs) is the pipette. One pip = 10 pipettes. Pipettes allow brokers to offer tighter spreads than a full pip but do not change how pip value is calculated for standard trade sizing.
Why are pip sizes different for JPY pairs?
The Japanese Yen has a much lower nominal value per unit than currencies like the US Dollar or Euro. Because of this, USD/JPY is quoted around 150.00 rather than around 1.0000 like EUR/USD. If 1 pip were 0.0001 on USD/JPY, that would represent a change of just 0.0001/150 = 0.000000667, which is an absurdly small price increment. Using 0.01 as the pip size (the second decimal place) keeps pip sizes at a meaningful, comparable scale across pairs.
How do I calculate pip value for a non-USD account?
Start with the standard formula for a USD-denominated result, then convert to your account currency. For a EUR account trading GBP/USD: pip value in USD = 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per lot. Convert to EUR: $10 ÷ current USD/EUR rate. If USD/EUR = 0.92, pip value = $10 × 0.92 = €9.20 per standard lot. The pip value calculator handles this automatically — just select your account currency and it applies the correct conversion.
