Frequently Asked Questions
- How is net profit calculated for a stock trade?
- Net profit = (Sell Price × Shares − Sell Fee) − (Buy Price × Shares + Buy Fee). The cost basis includes the buy fee because it is part of your acquisition cost. The sell fee reduces your net proceeds. The return percentage is calculated on the cost basis (total amount invested including fees).
- Does this include taxes?
- No. The calculator shows pre-tax profit. Use the Capital Gains Tax Calculator to estimate the tax owed on your gain based on your jurisdiction's tax rate and holding period.
- What counts as a fee?
- Enter any transaction cost charged by your broker — flat commissions, per-share fees (multiplied by shares), regulatory fees, or exchange charges. Many modern brokers offer commission-free trading; in that case enter 0 for both fees.
- Can I use this for fractional shares?
- Yes. The calculator accepts fractional share quantities. Enter the exact decimal number of shares you hold (e.g. 1.5 shares of a $500 stock).
