Futures Margin Calculator
Calculate total initial and maintenance margin for futures positions. Uses exchange-mandated flat per-contract margins — not leverage-based like OTC CFDs.
Formula
Futures margin formula (exchange-mandated flat per-contract)
Contracts × Initial/Contract × USD→Acct Rate
Contracts × Maintenance/Contract × USD→Acct Rate
Maintenance/Contract ÷ Initial/Contract × 100
Key distinction: Futures margin is a flat exchange-mandated amount per contract, not Notional ÷ Leverage. OTC commodity CFDs use the leverage-based model — they are different products with different margin systems.
Worked Example
Given
2 ES contracts · Initial margin $12,400/contract · Maintenance $11,300/contract · USD account
- Total Initial Margin
- 2 × $12,400 = $24,800
- Total Maintenance Margin
- 2 × $11,300 = $22,600
- Maintenance Ratio
- $11,300 ÷ $12,400 × 100 = 91.13%
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is futures margin different from CFD/forex margin?
- Futures margin is a flat per-contract dollar amount set by the exchange (CME, NYMEX, COMEX). It is not calculated as a percentage of notional value at a chosen leverage ratio. The exchange sets these rates based on historical volatility and adjusts them periodically. CFD/forex margin = Notional ÷ Leverage; Futures margin = Exchange-mandated flat amount × Contracts.
- What is initial vs maintenance margin?
- Initial margin is what you must deposit to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum you must keep in your account while holding the position. If your account equity falls below the maintenance margin, you receive a margin call and must deposit additional funds to bring equity back to the initial margin level — or face forced liquidation.
- Where do I find current margin rates for ES, NQ, CL, and GC?
- CME Group publishes current margin rates at cmegroup.com → Market Data → Margin Rates. Rates change with market volatility. Typical approximate values as of 2025: ES initial ≈ $12,400, NQ initial ≈ $17,600, CL initial ≈ $6,600, GC initial ≈ $10,000. These are illustrative — always check current exchange rates before trading.
- Does the calculator handle margin calls?
- No. The calculator shows the static margin requirement at position open. If your equity falls to the maintenance level, the margin call threshold is: Total Maintenance Margin shown by this calculator. Keep sufficient buffer (e.g. 2× initial margin in your account) to withstand adverse moves without a margin call.
