Formula
CFD P&L formula

Profit / Loss
Price Difference × Contracts × Point Value
Worked Example
Given
Long 2 S&P 500 CFD contracts · Contract size = 50 · Open 5,000 · Close 5,050 · USD account
- Price Difference (long)
- 5,050 − 5,000 = 50 points
- Point Value
- 50 × 1.0 = $50 per point
- Profit / Loss
- 50 × 2 × $50 = $5,000 profit
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is CFD profit calculated?
- CFD profit equals the price difference (close minus open for longs; reversed for shorts) multiplied by the number of contracts and the contract size. This gives you profit in the price currency, which is then converted to your account currency using the quote-to-account rate.
- What is the contract size in a CFD?
- Contract size is the unit multiplier for each CFD contract. An S&P 500 CFD might have a contract size of 50, meaning each 1-point move is worth $50 per contract. Index CFDs typically range from 1–50; commodity CFDs from 1–1,000 depending on the underlying.
- Does this include spreads and commissions?
- No. The calculator uses the exact open and close prices you enter. To account for spreads, adjust your close price by the spread width (e.g. if spread is 0.5 points, close at 5050 becomes effective close of 5049.5 for a long). Commissions should be subtracted separately from the result.
- What is the Quote → Account Rate?
- This is the exchange rate that converts the CFD price currency into your account currency. For a USD-denominated index CFD (S&P 500) with a USD account, enter 1.0. For a UK100 CFD priced in GBP with a USD account, enter the GBP/USD rate (e.g. 1.27).
